The Progress of our College

Our History

In January 1955, Nuala McCluskey SSL (RIP) arrived in Zonkwa from Ireland to establish the St Louis Hospital, Zonkwa, at the request of Monsignor John McCarthy SMA, who later became Archbishop of Kaduna Archdiocese. The St Louis School of Midwifery in Zonkwa was later established in 1961, beginning with the training of Grade II Midwives and upgrading in 1965 to also provide training in General Nursing. The school gained autonomy from the hospital in 2003 and it has been regularly upgraded over the years in response to different needs. It trains an average of 50 midwives per year and has trained over 2,000 midwives to date, who are working in different parts of the country. It has gained recognition for its high standards of education and for producing competent and skilled midwives and nurses who play a crucial role in maternal, neonatal, and child health care.

For several years, the school has had provisional approval from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria for an upgrade to the status of a College of Nursing Sciences. In 2014, the school risked being closed because problems with its infrastructure and its inability to fulfil other requirements for accreditation by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. The Sisters of St Louis have made concerted efforts to ensure that the school remained in existence - they conducted a needs assessment, identified gaps, and produced a Strategic Plan which would allow full accreditation to be achieved. To meet accreditation standard, the school was expanded, redeveloped and upgraded.

The school celebrated its diamond jubilee on August 25, 2021, with activities such as a Thanksgiving Mass, Alumni Reunion, Cultural Dance and Display, special health talks, and community outreach programs. The highlight was a colourful parade through the streets of Zonkwa, showcasing the school’s rich history and achievements. It was a memorable and meaningful jubilee celebration that brought together past and present students, staff, and well-wishers to celebrate the school’s legacy in Nursing and Midwifery education.

In September 2021, the school received full accreditation status for the first time from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. It received another accreditation visit in November 2023, which you can read about HERE in Issue 137 of Musings, the purpose of which was to assess whether the school could be upgraded to a College of Nursing Sciences.

The news of the upgrading of the St Louis School of Midwifery to the St Louis College of Nursing Sciences was received with great joy and jubilation on February 8, 2024. The training programme for the National Diploma/ Higher Diploma in Nursing will hopefully commence in October 2024, after the visit of the National Board for Technical Education, Kaduna State. The current school enrolment stands at 209 comprising of three sets made up of 66, 76 and 67 students respectively.
